Top 10 Best Games To Be Excited About For 2011

Gamers, prepare for 2011. There are some very cool game titles coming. George Lucas and his studio are releasing the first series of the Star Wars video game. Electronic Arts is trying to take Crysis to a whole new level. We also have Rage, Portal 2 and Gears of War 3, all delightful if you love to smash those evil monsters and see even uglier creatures.

Last but not least, Mortal Kombat and Dead Space will provide a new level of enjoyment for FPS fans out there. Let’s get started with the best video games for 2011!

As you go, you’ll face the strange laws of gravity in the world (and maybe learn some new things about physics) and learn how to use your gun in creative ways.

This game is 2D. 2D game play BUT 3D graphics. The creators will try to resemble the time of the first 3 series of Mortal Kombat. What’s new, however, is the locations and some of the characters.

Enough with FPS games. Time for something exciting, something that will pump your adrenalin…cops…yes…and a car…let’s just hope it’s DirectX 11 and has a killer graphic.

The story…priceless. A guy is being shot and falls into coma. The game takes place in his coma dream (!!!). Some other strange additions are the inability to get out of the car and the low number of frames-per-second.

This website gives people what they really want to know about games, and gives it to them in an easy format. Metacritic brings together reviews of music, games, TV shows, and DVDs and averages numerical totals of all the combined reviews to form a singular number that gives the reader an idea of how entertaining or mediocre the product is. With video games, this is equivalent to reading dozens of game reviews and then averaging the writers’ opinions about them.

Of course, this is not the most popular gaming review site…this is only number ten, after all!

Gamespot is a website that gives readers news, previews, trailers, reviews, and demo downloads. At the time of writing this article, Gamespot.com is the 267^th most visited website in the US and 313^th worldwide. The site has been presented with many awards and commendations, including winning Webby Awards multiple years in a row. Gamespot covers all the major platforms: PC, Wii, Nintendo DS, Xbox 360, PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation 3. And recently, Gamespot has also added iPhones and even Android devices to its video game information coverage.

This is a sort of one-stop shop for all your gaming needs!

8. Reddit.com/r/gaming

Reddit.com is a social news media website. But to compare it to Gamespot.com or any other gaming website would not be fair, because Reddit covers much more than just gaming. The site consists of “subreddits,” which resemble subforums on a forum board—and one of these subreddits is /gaming. This site enables users to post their own content and then discuss it through comments. Thus, the reader can see the latest in video-game-related news and then discuss it with likeminded individuals.

For any video game enthusiast, the site is definitely worth checking out.

7. Gametrailers (gametrailers.com)

Gametrailers.com is a video game website that focuses primarily on game trailers and recorded gameplay. The trailers can even be watched in High Definition if desired. In recent years, the site has expanded to include more reviews and comedic videos, but it is still based around watching the latest and greatest of trailers, getting gamers excited for upcoming releases. For the newest trailers out there, gametrailers.com should always be the first place to visit.

6. The Escapist (escapistmagazine.com)

The Escapist promotes itself as an online magazine that covers video games, gaming industry, and gaming culture. On the website are various video series and editorial columns discussing games in our culture, including insightful analyses of the effect of games on everyday lives and the world around us.

However, the site is probably best known for Zero Punctuation. This is a series of video game reviews created by Ben “Yahtzee” Croshaw in a video format. Croshaw humorously criticizes games while giving the good ones backhanded compliments. If he says a game is even okay, then what he really means is it has game-of-the-year quality.

5. IGN (IGN.com)

IGN is a news and reviews site for video games, movies, and music, although its primary focus is undoubtedly on games. The site includes reviews and up-to-date relevant articles on what’s happening in the video game industry—from discussions of upcoming games to behind-the-scenes looks at the companies behind the games. Its reviews have all kinds of media packed into them and are often a good first reference for reading about an upcoming game—every review has pictures, videos of gameplay, and trailers embedded into the text review itself.

4. PC Gamer (Pcgamer.com)

PC Gamer is a top-selling gaming magazine that also has a popular online component. The site (and the magazine) focuses on recent news in the gaming world in addition to reviews, previews, hardware discussions, and “classic” gaming. PCGamer.com is notable for also including a separate section on the site for articles related to free pc games, including demos, free-to-play MMOs, browser-based games, and indie works. Most gaming websites do not acknowledge the realm of free games as important, even though most gamers would tell you that free games can be just as fun or significant as ones you spend $50 to play.

All things considered, PC Gamer is undeniably king when it comes to PC gaming.

3. Kotaku (Kotaku.com)

Kotaku is, at its heart, a video game news website. There is no obvious division of news between “important” topics such as game release dates or “unimportant” topics such as humorous videos, but after getting used to the hodgepodge of news, Kotaku has countless interesting articles all in one place. Additionally, the topics on Kotaku include the kind of material that normal gaming websites would never discuss—such as the prominence of pirating software on various consoles or strange Japanese video games that may be offensive to certain individuals.

2. GameRankings (Gamerankings.com)

The GameRankings website is a rating site comparable to Metacritic but it focuses only on video games. Additionally, it collects data from online and offline sources and even includes ratings for obscure and “classic” games from decades ago. The site lists all relevant reviews and then averages the values from any sites deemed notable—a small review blog may get listed but not averaged into the total rating, for example. Because of this particular system of rating calculation, including many other rules narrowing down what reviews are calculated into the total, GameRankings.com is usually the most accurate video game ranking site on the net.

Ah, GameFAQs. This site is actually owned by CBS, which also owns Gamespot (#9), but the website is undeniably worth mentioning in its own right. GameFAQs hosts frequently asked questions, walkthroughs, save files, reviews, screenshots, and cheats for video games. What is notable about this website is that almost all content is submitted voluntarily by the site’s users. All consoles are covered by GameFAQs, from PC, to Atari, to modern consoles.

10. Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem

Eternal Darkness tells an epic story that spans over 2000 years, as a dozen different characters try to stop an ancient and evil power from conquering the world. Along the way they’ll explore dark temples and creepy old houses, and encounter a variety of nightmarish creatures.

While the scope of the story and the game’s chilling atmosphere are impressive, Eternal Darkness’ most famous feature is its sanity effects; as your character encounters horrifying sights their sanity starts to decay, and that leads to weird things. You’ll see blood on the walls or enemies that aren’t really there, or the game will mess with you more directly by changing the volume on your TV or pretending to erase your save game file. If you’re not a huge video game fan, just trust us on this: there’s nothing that will shock a gamer more than the prospect of an accidentally deleted save game.

9. Dead Space

Dead Space is, as the name implies, set in space, where word on the street is that no one can hear you scream. You’ll be playing it in your basement though, so try to keep the noise down or anyone who lives with you will think you’re a wimp.

To be more specific, the game is set on a giant mining ship that has sent out a distress signal and you’re part of the rescue team that’s been ordered to investigate. You soon discover that every crewmember has mutated into a violent monster. When most of your team is killed it’s up to you to rescue the dark and claustrophobic ship while aliens jump out at you from every corner. It’s tense, bleak and immersive, thanks to a superbly designed setting and some truly creepy audio.

8. F.E.A.R.

F.E.A.R. is only number eight on this list, but it’s number one on our upcoming article about least creative game names. The title is an awkward acronym for “First Encounter Assault Recon,” a special ops branch of the US Army that deals with paranormal threats. You play as a new member of this team during an investigation into a facility where research into telepathic powers has gone wrong.

Heavily inspired by Japanese horror films, F.E.A.R. drops a creepy little girl into the middle of an otherwise standard first person shooter. She spends the game toying with you, popping up every now and then to taunt you or force you to experience unpleasant hallucinations. Wondering when she’ll show up next keeps you on your toes, to the point where it becomes draining to play for more than a couple of hours at a time. The contrast between being able to gun down most opponents with ease, only to be left helpless in the face of a little girl, is remarkably effective.

7. Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth

Dark Corners of the Earth is inspired by the work of famous horror writer H.P. Lovecraft and it faithfully recreates several of his most famous settings and creatures. You play as a private detective who’s been given the job of finding a missing person in the shadowy town of Innsmouth, an investigation that soon turns into an encounter with evil cultists, sea monsters and several ancient horrors.

To make matters worse, you’re forced to sneak through most of the game; enemies can easily overwhelm you if you’re spotted. And, much like in Eternal Darkness, you need to maintain your hero’s sanity. Expose him to too much horror and he’ll start to hallucinate, suffer from schizophrenia, and even kill himself. Nothing makes a game more nerve-wracking than being forced to listen to your character babble about how he has no hope of surviving.

6. Condemned: Criminal Origins

Condemned has you playing as a crime scene investigator who’s been framed for a double murder. You try to prove his innocence by tracking down the serial killer who was really responsible, a process that involves a mixture of crime scene analysis and beating homeless people to death with rusty pipes.

Don’t worry, they had it coming; they all turned into violent psychopaths for no apparent reason, which is another mystery you have to solve. And that’s part of what makes Condemned so scary- the brutal, hand to hand combat is genuinely unsettling. Factor in some tense exploration of dark and dreary abandoned buildings and all together you have a rather disturbing experience. Oh, and Condemned also managed to give us a lifelong fear of mannequins; watch the video clip to see what we mean.

5. Penumbra: Black Plague

No, this isn’t a game about the actual black plague. That would just be depressing. Instead, you’re exploring a ruined research facility where all the staff have either been killed or turned into zombie-like creatures that are looking to make a meal out of you.

Black Plague is ostensibly an adventure game, as you progress by exploring and solving a variety of puzzles. Unfortunately, it’s tough to crack riddles when you’re worried by the prospect of a monster jumping out and ripping your face off. You can fight back, but you’re weak, so you’re better off avoiding conflict. Luckily, there aren’t a lot of monsters, but that’s actually part of what makes Black Plague so scary. There are just enough enemies to keep the tension running high while you explore the mysterious setting, and you know that if you’ve been safe for a while then there’s trouble coming soon.

4. Siren: Blood Curse

Siren tells the story of an American TV crew that’s come to Japan to do a report on a legendary “missing village.” They discover it, but they also discover that it’s full of bloodthirsty zombies. Think of it as a Discovery Channel show gone horribly wrong.

You control several different characters over the course of the game, and they range from “guy who can use a gun but can’t find much ammo” to “unarmed little girl.” Therefore, you’ll spend most of your time skulking around and trying to avoid monsters. And believe us, you’ll want to avoid them. Siren features some of the most gruesome creatures we’ve ever seen in a video game. To make matters worse, you get to see through their eyes: whenever a monster closes in on you you’ll get a glimpse of their perspective, which is especially terrifying when they’re looking straight at your hiding place. Or when they’re eating your face.

3. Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly

Fatal Frame 2 is a game starring two little girls (do we even have to tell you it was made in Japan?) who get lost in a forest and find themselves trapped in a foggy village populated only by angry ghosts. Playing as a vulnerable child is a daunting prospect, but unlike Siren you at least get a weapon to fight back. No, it’s not a vacuum cleaner or a proton pack; you’re equipped with an ancient and powerful… uh, camera. Crap.

OK, so it’s a special kind of camera that can kill ghosts. Unfortunately, it’s only effective at close range (apparently the ghost slaying telephoto lens hasn’t been invented yet). So you’ve got to get personal with the deceased in order to take them down, and you better not run out of film in the process or you’ll be in serious trouble. Combined with a weird Japanese ghost story and a very creepy setting, Fatal Frame 2 is easily the most frightening camera based games out there.

2. Amnesia: The Dark Descent

Everything we said about Penumbra also applies to Amnesia (the two games were made by the same developer). There’s just one key difference: you can’t fight. At all. When monsters show up your only option is to run away in fear, hide in the shadows, and pray they don’t find you.

Story wise, you play as an amnesiac (bet you didn’t see that coming) who’s woken up in a dark castle. All you remember is that you’re being chased by something; it’s up to the player to explore the castle and figure out what’s going on. It sounds simple enough, at least until you discover that the castle is one of the scariest game environments ever created. Every dark corner and closed door might have a monster lurking behind it, and that’s a terrifying prospect for a player that has no means of defending themselves. Oh, and did we mention that your character is going insane?

1. Silent Hill 2

Silent Hill 2 is the thinking man’s horror game, which means you’ll be scratching your head as you attempt to unravel the plot, at least when you’re not busy screaming in terror. The hero of the game has come to the foggy titular town at the behest of a letter he received from his supposedly dead wife. He discovers a woman that looks just like her, yet she claims to have never met him. He also discovers a lot of monsters.

The town of Silent Hill is spooky in its own right, but there’s psychological horror at work here too. The enemies are designed to reflect the main character’s fears and flaws: for example, deformed nurses with skimpy clothes and suggestive poses represent our hero’s sexual repression and objectification of women. This leads to some very weird foes, as well as one of the most shocking scenes in video game history: a monstrous stand-in for all of our protagonist’s sins decides to get, um, forcibly intimate with some of the more feminine creatures. Moments like that are what makes Silent Hill 2 a landmark in both the horror game genre and our nightmares.

1. Call Of Duty: Black Ops

Call of Duty have always been a favorite among the game geeks since the first series. They were voted the best action/shooting game multiple times throughout their franchise.

The Call of Duty black Ops takes on the legacy superbly with awesome graphics, gameplay and story. The campaign is exciting and varied and the multiplayer mode is just too exciting. A Zombie series have been included in this game.

The Game is easily the best of 2010! The only problem of the game is that it gets over very quickly.

2. Need For Speed Hot Pursuit

The Need For Speed Hot Pursuit I and II have been very successful and the recent NFS games proved to be not so successful. Electronic Arts came up with the all new NFS Hot Pursuit III and let me tell you that ITS AWESOME.

NFS: Hot Pursuit III is just pure over the edge adrenalin pumping racing entertainment. With awesome tracks and even more awesome cars, this game could not be ignored. The multiplayer mode is the most impressive one with an 8 player capability.

The NFS HP3 is undoubtedly the best racing game of 2010

3. Battlefield: Bad Company 2 – Vietnam

Definitely one of the best games of 2010. The predecessor was one of the best multiplayer shooting games ever to be made, rivaling neck on with Call of Duty, Medal Of Honor and Counter Strike. With its realistic graphics and war like gameplay experience, this game is in my opinion one of the best FPS game.

The game comes with the best maps and awesome atmosphere. Weapons are impressive and so are the vehicles. Battlefield: Bad Company 2 is considered to be among the best multiplayer games ever.

4. Blur

If you liked the movie “death race”, then i’m sure that you will love this game. Blur is a new game that has a high level graphics and a difficult game to play, which makes it challenging. Its like Need For Speed, but with weapons. Yea, weapons! This game is not about speed only. You need to sway away from your opponents weapons and shoot your rivals to get to the top.

Driving is a bliss as it is smooth and responsive. Blur is most enjoyed in the multiplayer mode as the single player mode kind of gets pissing off when you get blown off in the last minute and you don’t have anyone around you to swear at.

5. Dead Rising 2

Its always nice to kill zombies. Left 4 Dead series is a great example of how fun killing zombies can be! The sequel to the run away hit Xbox game Dead Rising is an addictive adventure game. The combats are bloody and awesome. The weapon combinations are fun to use. The only problem is that the game takes a lot of time in loading.

Dead Rising 2 may not have the best graphics and the best strategies in story, but it is one addictive game that could make you sit in front of your Pc the whole day.

6. Fallout: New Vegas

Fallout 3, which was released two years earlier was known to be one of the best open adventure games ever. It was too sad that the game had a very short story. However the sequel – Fallout: New Vegas has the same fun formula of the Fallout 3 with an extra additions that would make the fallout franchise fans go gaga over this one.

The Fallout: New Vegas is like an expansion to the Fallout 3 as it is so similar to it. The Fallout 4 has more missions and exploring to do and the graphics have been improved. This game is worth trying out.

7. Lara Croft and the Guardian Of Light

Lara Croft is always considered one of the best adventure games of all time. The series continues and so does its reputation. Its a whole new level in exploring, combat and bringing things together. The challenges produced are exciting and the graphics are slick and crisp.

The puzzles are clever and the gameplay is just simply brilliant. The Guardian of Light is a complete entertainment package. It doesn’t disappoint you or any of its successful predecessors at all.

World Of Warcraft is one of the worlds most played multiplayer games of all time. Any update or a new game from this series is like blessings from God to those World of Warcraft addicts. The Cataclysm doesn’t show much improvement from the recent free update, but it does act like a great expansion to this solid series.

It has new and varied quests that will keep you go. It is the most impressive expansion and has inventive quests, great story and amazing visuals. This is a worthy game to be listed in the top 10 games of 2010

9. ArmA II: Operation Arrowhead

The ArmA II is definitely one of the best of 2010. The game is simply exhilarating and thrilling. Filled with modern and retro weapons, this game is backed with striking visuals and brilliant game play and a great story line. It delivers great battlefield experience. There are team play missions and also single player missions too.

The Geography and the graphics complement one another gorgeously and is a great combat game. Overall this is a great action game and is worthy for the list.

10. Mafia II

During the 1930s Mafia were prominent in the US, Mexico and other countries. Mafia stories have always been successful and so was the first addition to this series. Mafia II comes with exciting action and a killer mob story. This game is impressive and contains violent attacks.

It’s a great game for mafia and action lovers. The graphics are good and so is the story line.
